FOODS THAT ARE BANNED (but NOT in the U.S.) 2

In a previous post, I discussed some of the most common foods containing certain ingredients which have been banned in numerous countries such as the UK, Europe, China, Japan, and Brazil. These ingredients are utilized for higher production rates, longer shelf lives, and MONEY brought in from unsuspecting consumers.

Below are more banned foods and ingredients. Yes. There are more. There are always more.

(FROZEN) FOODS & AZODICARBONAMIDE

Processed foods are processed foods, but some foods that are frozen give rise to being a healthier version of quick microwave meals, in that we can take time and put them in the oven to "cook" for our families.

Azodicarbonamide is a chemical used to produce yoga mats, has been found to cause cancer in mice, and is also used in approximately 500 foods produced by brands such as Jimmy Dean, Little Debbie, and more.

It is used in frozen foods as a "dough conditioner" to improve texture in foods when frozen an intended to be reheated.

Even though the FDA has assured us the amount used in foods easily obtainable to the general public is safe, Nature's Own has ceased using azodicarbonamide in its products. Are companies becoming responsible for their actions, or just attempting to get out in front of the bad publicity when SHTF? Who knows. Who cares. Just get it out of our foods.

FAT FREE & OLESTRA

Olestra is a synthetic fat substitute that was originally created by Procter & Gamble designed to quickly pass through the digestive tract (explosive diarrhea in the 90s) without being absorbed. The problem here is that it also alters the digestive tract, making it difficult if not impossible for nutrients and vitamins to be absorbed, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K.

FARMED SALMON & ASTAXANTHIN

Wild-caught salmon have that beautiful dark pink color due to their natural diet, which is full of carotenoids - the same thing making flamingos pink and crabs orange. In salmon, this coloring is obtained through a diet rich in algae, krill, and other crustaceans. American farmed salmon are fed a diet mainly consisting of pellets (fishmeal and fish oil), while being harvested in pens.

Lacking their natural food source, farmed salmon lack the color often associated with them. In comes synthetic astaxanthin. Synthetic astaxanthin is actually a petrochemical derivative and up to 4 times less expensive than its natural counterpart. Readily produced and available to the public, petrochemical salmon. Nice.

I am especially disgusted by this little piece of information because recently, my father has been trying to really clean up his diet. He is 78 years old and only takes a low dose blood pressure medication and a statin for high cholesterol. He lately has been LOVING his baked salmon and steamed broccoli lunches, feeling super accomplished. Am I to tell him to stop eating petroleum chemicals? Is this less threatening and toxic than fried chlorine-washed chicken?

APPLES & DPA

DPA (diphenylamine) is a chemical used on (non-organic) apples after harvesting so that the skin doesn't brown during transit from picking to sale and is so controversial that the EU banned it in 2012!

Think maybe it doesn't matter much, or that it can't really be that bad?

By my math, we've been eating this DPA since birth (for most of us) 80% of the time we eat an apple... walking by the counter in the kitchen, making a "healthy choice" and grabbing an apple instead of chips or cookies. Great.

If I have to choose calories, I grab beer and let cookies and chips go as a personal preference. If I'm trying to be healthier, even grabbing an apple could be toxic? Is probably toxic? IMO this is all horseshit.

CHEWING GUM & BHA

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) is a chemical compound linked to cancer found in chewing gum, as well as other readily accessible foods that are seemingly unassuming...

Listen, y'all. Be safe out there. Know what you're eating. If you're reading a food label and only a few of the ingredients ring a bell, PUT IT DOWN! I know we are short on time and I know healthy food is expensive, but ask yourself this...WHY??? Who is profiting from all of this?

The USDA has its own marketing team. None of this is an accident. Big Food isn't rich just because we all have to eat. There is a definitive connection between Big Food and Big Pharma, and we are it.

My hope is that these posts illustrate the need for knowledge. "Eating healthier" just isn't enough, as the info on petrochemicals in farm-raised salmon and dye on oranges has shown.
